4 year anniversary dinner

Yesterday was our 4th anniversary together. I had to go to work but when I got home, Mr HSH surprised me with the most amazing dinner date at home. He knows of my love for fine dining, but as we are on a budget, he decided to bring fine dining to me-a home cook meal based on the recipes from the Masterchef Australia Volume 2 cookbook. Mr HSH is a pretty good cook, if I say so myself. He is probably the best cook out of all the guys we know. In this day and age, when guys can usually only fry up some bacon and eggs and instant noodle, that is something I'm very proud of and lucky to have.

Anyway, I do shift work so I worked all day. Mr HSH on the other hand, spent the Sunday purchasing ingredients and cooking the meal. I was even asked to close my eyes when I got home as I wasn't allowed to see what was going on until it was all ready. Anyway, the food was all very good (especially the entree) and requires a fair bit of technical skills. We had an wonderful night chilling at home and I felt like the luckiest girl on Earth.

Entree-Callum's Tuna Tataki with Wasabi Avocado. He substituted with Salmon. Gorgeous dish and not difficult to make.

Main-Aaron's Prawn and Fennel Ravioli with Chipotle Chilli Oil. The infamous "disgustingly good" dish that Matt Preston threw to the ground. Also very good, but perhaps slighly less wowed by it.

Marion's Lemon and Mint Spring Rolls with Syrup-I really enjoyed this dish but Mr HSH found it to be too heavy.

On a side note, I've decided to replant my currently dying herb garden. I bought rosemary, mint, thyme, coriander and italian parsley from Bulleen arts and garden.

Qipao/cheongsam as reception dress

To honour my chinese heritage as our wedding will be quite westernised, I have decided to wear a Qipao or Cheongsam (as the southern part of China would call it) as my reception dress. Ideally, I would like a fabric similar to the one the actress is wearing above. It has pinks and reds and in it, but still has interesting patterns without being over the top. Traditionally, the bride should be wearing red but I think that may be too much for me. Plus, Mr HSH would like me to be able to wear it again for a different occassion in the future. Below are all dresses I found from Eaststore (except for the 1st red one), an online store that specialises in traditional chinese wear. The Qipaos they have range from about 150 to 300 dollars. Apparently they are hand embroidered and made from 100 percent silk.

I think this green is exquisite but perhaps not appropriate for our wedding.
Probably too OTT red.

One of the top contenders. The colour is fuchsia, similar to red, but  less traditional.
Another version of the Fuschia Qipao but with different embroidery details. Quite striking as well.
Another top contender but I'm concerned the blue will make me look too old and not wedding like enough. This one is MR HSH's favourite.

Cute and demure, but doesn't stand out.
If i do end up buying from them, I will get the Qipao customed made as I am quite short. I wonder whether the longer length qipao will make me look too short...

Thoughts of the day

I went and took a train to flinder street station for the first time in a year today. I must say there isn't a lot of change to the public transport system from how I remember it, except for the introduction of Myki. I am one of those people who don't have a myki card so had to buy your average Met ticket. $11.90 for a zone 1 and 2 adult daily. It's almost as expensive (but not quite) as car parking in the city. Anyway, the city was just as colourful as it ever was. I was amused at these two scantily dressed girls whose signs read "Turn over a new leaf. Turn Vegan" Courtesy of Peta. I'm personally not an advocate of activist groups like Peta. I find them too radical and uncompromising, but I did find myself amused by the guys lining up to take pictures with these girls. I, like the rest of the crowd, took a picture too. Just for memories sake...

I was exceedingly pissed off that there were 3 lines of only for the people exiting Flinder street station and at least 7 for those entering. This is my first encouter with the so called frankenbarrier.

It's been a long time since I've bought myself a dress. MR HSH is a big fan of budgeting and we are attempting to save up big time for our future house. However, I saw this dress on sale today at SABA and fell in love! It was originally around $349, went down to $169 and today I got it for a further 30 percent off. Grand total of $118 dollars! I'm stoked. Perhaps engagement picture dress material?

Oh, and I would appreciate it if anyone could give me your opinion on this following dress. It is from a site called Light of the box and they sell dresses that are tailored and designed in China. I am considering this pink sequined dress as my reception dress. The dress seem to be on perpetual sale-at present, they are asking for approx $500, down from over $2000.

Easter Friday at the Lake House

Easter Friday was such a gorgeous day (the beginning anyway. Let's forget the storm that came later that night). I was scheduled to do night duty that night but Mr HSH decided that we should treat ourselves to lunch at the Lake House in Daylesford. We've frequented Lake House several times before and in fact, it may be one of the more up market restaurants that we choose to keep revisiting.  It may have to do with a combination of beautiful country ambiance and a very reasonably priced menu.

The first time we went to the Lake house was when MR HSH were in Daylesford celebrating our first 100 days as a couple (lame, i know). It was the middle of winter and I remember stumbling across the lake house whilst considering whether we should go back to Melbourne for dinner. The warmth and ambiance of the restaurant when we entered just took our breath away, and together with immaculate service, and beautiful food, made the night one worthy of remembering. One little incident did occur that night. MR HSH found a piece of glass in his dessert. We told the waiter, who apologised, and the manager later also came to apologise and offered us some complimentary dessert wine. Nonetheless, we still fell in love with the Lake house. We seriously considered getting married there, but in the end, decided Daylesford was too far for guests to travel.

Anyway, fast forward to Easter Friday 2012. We got up late morning and on impulse, decided to go to Daylesford. We rang the lake house to get a booking, half expecting to be turned down as it was the beginning of the Easter weekend. Fortunately, they were able to accommodate us. We decided to sit outside as it was such a beautiful day.

Service was professional, prompt and efficient and we didn't have to wait long for food at all. For those who are not familiar with the Lake House, they are a 2 hatted fine dining restaurant with a philosophy for using local seasonal produce. We chose to have 3 courses for 88 dollars.

Let's start with the bread. MR HSH and I love bread. Him in particular, as 3 courses alone would not usually be enough to fill him up. The bread was fresh out of the oven and beautifully baked. The butter that came with the bread was smooth and silky. 3/4 of the way through the first serving of bread, we ran out of butter. We asked for more from one of the waiters and was delighted to be presented not just with another plate of butter but another full bowl of bread! They are indeed generous! That's one way to impress your customers.

For entree, I had the sashimi mackerel and MR HSH had the Charcuterie Board. They were both mouthwatering.! My sashimi mackerel had the most delicate texture and everything on the plate worked seamlessly to compliment each other. Mr HSH was extremely happy with his charcuterie board and the variety it provided. It was a much bigger dish compared to the Sashimi mackerel.

For mains, I had the steak and Mr HSH had the Snapper. My Steak was well cooked (although, i thought the steak was probably more medium, than the medium rare i requested) and had the most interesting smokey favour. It came with a separate dish of slippery jack and pine mushroom and that was the star of the main to me. It was just so full of buttery, garlicky goodness, i thought i was in food heaven! I didn't really try Mr HSH's snapper, but he did say it was less tasty and that he preferred my steak.

We ordered potatoes as a side and was slightly disappointed they weren't roasted and crispy. Nonetheless, still reasonably tasty.

The desserts were more disappointing. Mr HSH ordered the White chocolate and I actually quite enjoyed it, although I felt it fell short compared to the other dishes we tasted. My textures of chocolate with mint however, was distinctly pedestrian and I didn't enjoy it at all and wouldn't recommend it.

Together with a couple of drinks, our bill came to 201 dollars which I felt was reasonable for a very pleasant lunch overall. A couple of the dishes were a bit hit and and miss but the entrees and the steak honestly made us squeal with delight in our seats. To me, the lake house, romantic and relaxing, will continue to be one of our favourite country restaurants and comes with my highest recommendation. It was a much anticipated escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Wedding flowers

I love flowers. They are one of my passions in life. So for our wedding in summer next year, I'd like our wedding flowers to have a wildflower, "just picked from the garden" feel. I"m not looking for traditional David Austin rose bouquets (although nothing wrong with that either!). I want flowers with complementing colours, preferably something colourful and bright.

I have three bridesmaids and my aim is for them to all have different bouquets so as to differentiate their very different personalities.

Our centrepieces will have a similar type of presence. Low key (I don't want big, tall centerpieces blocking everyones view on the table), colourful and have a garden cottage, wildflower feel. Hopefully, we'll be able to find appropriate seasonal flowers to keep the costs down.

I have a real passion for peonies but I think they may be out of season in Melbourne by the time we get married. My budget for wedding flowers is about 1000 dollars at the moment. I hope to be able to fit in 9 centerpieces, 1 bridal bouquet, 3 bridesmaid bouquets, button holes and corsages. Think we'll make it?

Masterchef recipes-chocolate creations

Once again, I have been making very good use of the Masterchef cookbook, volume 2. This is the volume with recipes from the 2010 show. The winner was Adam Liaw and Callum Hann became the 1st runner up. At the time, I was hoping Callum will win. I always love the underdog...

Anyway, Mr HSH got the cookbook from his boss as a birthday present a couple of years ago and I have made very good use of it since. Below are two dishes that I had baked following the recipes on the book.

Carrie's Chocolate and raspberry souffle. If anyone has the book, I highly recommend this recipe. Easy to make and absolutely delicious!
The recipe asked for lavender cream. Unfortunately, at the time I was making the souffle, I did not have any dried culinary lavender. So i just whipped up some cream with caster sugar added for sweetness.

Fiona's Chocolate Ganache Tarts with Raspberries and Lavender cream. Any recipe requiring dried lavender. Again I didn't have any, so I just used normal whipped cream. This recipe did not live up to the hype it had on the show. I thought it was too heavy.

Dried Culinary lavender bought from the Melbourne's international flower and garden show.

Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show

Mr HSH and I went to the Melbourne Internation Flower and Garden Show at the Royal Exhibition Centre today. It was a very pleasant day. Threatening to rain but remained clear. The displays were beautiful, although there were way too many people enjoying the show which made it extremely crowded. As we have yet to build our dream house, it was not really practical for me to buy any of the peony roots or other seeds and bulbs to plant... Instead, I did buy some dried lavender for culinary use.

Below are some of the highlights of the day!
